Abstract

The European water framework directive was designed to reestablish good ecological conditions for lakes and rivers. Longitudinal and lateral connectivity is of great importance if this goal is to be met. Therefore, structures for passage of fish upstream and downstream along the Ruhr River in Germany, as a typical example of an managed river, must be planned and constructed with the goal in mind. New fish sluices, fish locks and fish slopes or ramps are needed as well as structures designed to reduce fish mortality at water removal points or in hydropower stations. A project in which burbots were reintroduced along the middle reaches of the Ruhr demonstrates the need for stocking to support the structure of the projected fish community.
